UNIVERSITI Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin was awarded with an honorary doctorate of engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT), New Jersey in the United States.
The doctorate was presented by SIT board of trustees joint chairman Dr Steven Shulman, in a ceremony in conjunction with its students’ graduation recently.
SIT interim president Prof Dr George P Korfiatis read the citation highlighting Prof Sharifah Hapsah’s contributions to research, the academia as well as her service to Malaysia and the global community.
During her address at the ceremony, Prof Sharifah Hapsah described SIT as a distinguished institution, adding that its technogenesis model and internships provided an experiential and hands-on approach for application of theory, nurturing creativity and entrepreneurship.
She also spoke of the career fair at SIT that allowed students to demonstrate their projects and the opportunity to be interviewed by major companies.
At UKM, she added, SIT’s technogenesis model was beginning to take root, developing the culture of integrating education with research technology and business so that its graduates and faculty will have the skills to conceive, lead and manage commercially viable technological projects.
She said UKM students and graduates were also encouraged to develop university innovations not only for economic gains but also to contribute to social development and environmental sustainability.
Prof Sharifah Hapsah said she was accepting the honorary doctorate on behalf of “my colleagues at UKM who are the ones who truly deserve this singular honour.” — UKM News Portal
