Big win for pro-Mahasiswa candidates

PETALING JAYA: The anti-establishment pro-Mahasiswa front prevented a clean sweep by pro-establishment groups by winning campus polls at Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM),

Pro-Mahasiswa candidates unofficially won 23 seats to Penggerak Mahasiswa’s 16 at UM to return to power after a one-year hiatus.

At UKM, the anti-establishment front won for the first time in seven years with an unofficial tally of 23 to 14.

The pro-establishment camp at UKM and most of the other public universities is known as pro-Aspirasi.

In other research universities, pro-Aspirasi groups triumphed.

The pro-Aspirasi camp won 22-6 at Universiti Sains Malaysia – the nation’s apex university; 32-11 at Universiti Putra Malaysia and 34-7 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Big wins were also recorded by pro-Aspirasi candidates at other universities such as Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melama and Universiti Malaysia Sabah, among others.

Campus election results will be made official after the period for objections is over.
